Mary Brown

Biography

Mary Brown was born in 1762 and died in 1807, her forty-five years encompassing the latter part of the eighteenth century and the opening of the nineteenth. She lived through a period of significant change in Calcutta, witnessing the consolidation of British power and the growth of the colonial city.

Mary Brown's memory is preserved at South Park Street Cemetery, where she rests among the community of Calcutta. Her life and death are recorded in the historical archives of this important burial ground, a testament to her place in the city's colonial society.
