Mary Hannah Krout was born in 1851 and rose to prominence as a writer whose reporting and essays brought sharp intellect and compassion to issues spanning Indiana politics to global affairs.

Her advocacy for women’s rights and her willingness to share stories from far-flung travels made her a respected voice, and friends laid her to rest amid the quiet slopes of Oak Hill Cemetery.
