Biography

Mary Lou Williams blazed trails as a pianist, arranger, and composer who moved effortlessly between swing, bebop, and sacred jazz. Her arrangements for big bands and symphonies displayed a rare harmonic sophistication, and her playing could both anchor a dance floor and elevate a contemplative space.

In later years she devoted herself to mentoring young players, composing jazz masses, and ensuring that the music bore witness to both artistry and faith. Her influence endures through the generations of musicians she shaped, and her remains lie at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
