Biography
Mary Virginia Merrick overcame prolonged illness to devote herself to the needs of children and families in Washington, D.C., founding the Christ Child Society in 1890 and rallying women volunteers to provide clothing, food, and companionship.
Throughout her life she insisted on practical acts of compassion, guiding the society as it opened nurseries, schools, and training programs that outlasted her and continue to honor her legacy near Oak Hill Cemetery.
