Mary Watson Whitney, born 1847, became one of the earliest American women to direct an astronomical observatory, succeeding Maria Mitchell at Vassar College and inspiring countless women to study the heavens.

Through lectures, research, and personal encouragement she broadened the view of what women could accomplish in the sciences, and her legacy shines still from Grove Hill Cemetery.
