Biography
Matt Whitaker Ransom (1826–1904) served as a Confederate general and afterwards as a United States senator from North Carolina, dedicating himself to rebuilding the state and representing its interests with dignity on the national stage.
He also served as minister to Mexico, and after a life of public service he returned home to rest in Jackson, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance and an enduring love for his constituency.
