Born in 1925, Maureen Stapleton rose from a modest Irish-American family to become one of the most versatile actresses of her generation. Her heartfelt, earthy performances on stage and screen earned her an Academy Award for Interiors, a Tony Award for The Rose Tattoo, and countless other honors, and she imbued every role with courage and humor.

Away from the spotlight she was known for her generosity toward young actors and for speaking candidly about addiction, reminding others that strength can be found in vulnerability. She remained a visible presence, offering mentorship to aspiring artists and encouraging honest storytelling before her passing in 2006.
