Meggie Albanesi

1899–1923 (age 24)

Biography

Meggie Albanesi's stage career shone with precocious brilliance, her youthful energy and expressive face making her a favourite in West End theatres and in several early films. Her performances were praised for their sincerity and warmth, and audiences felt she had the rare ability to make every role seem both new and deeply human.

When she died in 1923 at just twenty-three years old, the theatres fell silent for a moment, and St Pancras and Islington Cemetery now keeps her memory, a reminder of a generous talent snatched away too soon yet still luminous to those who remember.
