Menalcus Lankford

1883–1937 (age 54)

U.S. Representative

Biography

Menalcus Lankford brought his legal training and modest upbringing to the national stage, serving Virginia's Second District in the U.S. House of Representatives and working to secure deep-water channels, better schools, and fair shipping rates for Tidewater communities. He studied constituent needs personally, listening to shipwrights, farmers, and enlisted men before pressing legislation to improve their livelihoods.

After leaving Washington, Menalcus continued to mentor younger politicians and to advocate for veterans' care, making Forest Lawn Cemetery a place of remembrance for those he had championed in life.
