Mère Denis
1893–1989 (age 96)
Biography
Denise "Mère Denis" Jacob, who drew the admiration of millions with her cheerful determination in laundress spots, embodied the dignity of domestic labor. With a gentle laugh and vigorous arm she made a humbleness of chore into a reassuring presence for French households, always insisting that cleanliness came from patience and care.
She remained devoted to her native Calvados and an image of the working class: the ramparts of Saint-Hymer now cradle her, where visitors remember the warmth she brought to every soap bubble and the laughter she somehow kept alive in living rooms across the country.
