Michael Evenari
1904–1989 (age 85)
Biography
Michael Evenari emigrated from Germany and soon became a pioneer in desert agriculture, studying ancient Nabatean waterworks and applying those lessons to new techniques for cultivating the Negev. His research at the Hebrew University and the Jacob Blaustein Institutes helped farmers see how to conserve scarce water while producing healthy crops.
He taught students to treat arid land with respect, insisting that scientific rigor must go hand in hand with care for people and the environment; he rests at Har HaMenuchot.
