Michael Friedsam (1858–1931) was a successful businessman whose keen eye for opportunity allowed him to become an influential patron of New York City, especially in the arts. Having collected a remarkable array of paintings and decorative arts, he shared them through gifts to museums and libraries so that generations might enjoy them.

His generosity reached beyond galleries: he supported charitable causes and welcomed civic collaborators, leaving a legacy of cultural generosity as he rests at Salem Fields Cemetery.
