Moses Hallett

Biography

Born in 1834, Moses Hallett studied law in the East before answering the call of the Colorado Territory, where he built a practice in Denver and became known for his steady judgment; President Rutherford B. Hayes eventually tapped him to serve as U.S. District Judge, a post that put him at the center of the territory's transformation into statehood.

During his decades on the bench he shepherded the federal courts through disputes over mining claims, railroads, and growing municipalities, earning a reputation for fairness and calm temperament, and he is remembered among the pioneers resting in Fairmount Cemetery.
