Nagase Masaki

Biography

Nagase Masaki (1765–1835) was a distinguished Kokugaku scholar who devoted himself to the study of classical Japanese language, literature, and culture. As part of the broader Kokugaku movement, he contributed to the intellectual revival of interest in Japan's indigenous traditions and pre-Buddhist heritage during the Edo period.

Masaki's scholarly work reflected the Kokugaku emphasis on understanding Japan's unique cultural identity through rigorous study of ancient texts and traditions. His contributions to this important intellectual movement helped shape the cultural consciousness of his era. He was honored with burial at Honmyō-ji Temple, reflecting the respect accorded to his scholarly achievements.
