Napoleon B. Broward

Biography

Napoleon B. Broward (1857-1910) rose to prominence through his tireless work on behalf of Florida's people, serving as governor from 1905 to 1909 and championing ambitious efforts to drain the Everglades and improve transportation. He believed government had a duty to provide honest stewardship and greater opportunity for all residents, and he carried that conviction into every endeavor.

Even after leaving office, Broward continued to press for progress, encouraging the development of the state's waterways and supporting measures to strengthen civic life. He now rests at Evergreen Cemetery, where visitors remember him as a reformer who sought to broaden the chances for future generations.
