Biography

Narcissa Whitman was born in 1808 and became a pioneering missionary on the American frontier. She dedicated her life to educational and missionary work, traveling westward to establish the Whitman Mission in what is now Washington State. Her commitment to serving Native American communities and spreading Christian education made her a notable figure in the history of the Pacific Northwest.

Whitman died tragically in 1847 at the age of 39 during the Whitman Massacre, a pivotal event in frontier history. She was buried at the Whitman Mission National Historic Site Cemetery, where she is remembered as a courageous pioneer who gave her life to her missionary calling. Her legacy continues to be honored at the historic site dedicated to her memory.
