Neel Doff

1858–1942 (age 84)

Biography

Neel Doff, born in 1858, channeled her own experiences of poverty and hardship into novels that gave voice to the working poor, especially women and children struggling to survive in urban settings. Her autobiographical cycle, beginning with Jours de Famine, invited empathy for lives too often neglected by history.

Throughout her career she combined literature with compassion, using her platform to advocate for social reforms and to honor the dignity of labor, and she now rests among fellow seekers of justice in Ixelles Cemetery.
