Biography
Nelson G. Williams answered the call to service in the Civil War and rose to the rank of brigadier general, leading troops through some of the conflict’s hardest campaigns. His men praised him for practical judgment and a willingness to share the hardships of the march.
After the war he turned his attention to civic responsibilities, bearing the lessons of the battlefield into quieter forms of public service; his grave at Green-Wood marks a soldier who returned to peace with a steady heart and an enduring sense of duty.
