Biography

Nicolai Abildgaard (1743–1809) was an imaginative architect and artist who introduced neoclassical ideals into Danish court and public buildings, helping shape the visual identity of the capital and drawing inspiration from heroic stories.

As a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts he encouraged young talent to pair rigorous study with bold invention, and his students carried forward his belief that art should serve the moral and civic life of the nation; his final resting place is among the esteemed at Assistens Cemetery.
