Nusch Éluard

1906–1946 (age 40)

Biography

Nusch Éluard emerged in the 1930s as a luminous presence beside the Surrealists, intertwining her artistic gifts with the poetry and ideals of Paul Éluard, whose partner and muse she became. She brought warmth, courage, and a striking physicality to the movement, taking part in performances and collaborations that broadened its expressive reach.

Even as illness cut her life short in 1946, Éluard’s creative spirit, advocacy for women’s freedom, and unwavering support for friends in exile ensured she would be remembered not only as a model but as a vital artist in her own right.
