Biography
Odie Payne (1926-1989) was a Chicago blues drummer whose powerful yet tasteful rhythms fueled sessions by Muddy Waters, Elmore James and countless others. His deft brushwork and deep sense of swing made him a first-call accompanist on many of the classic recordings that defined postwar blues.
Beyond the studios, he shared his love of music with younger drummers, teaching that a good beat should always serve the song while sustaining the groove. Oak Woods Cemetery holds his remains, marking the resting place of a musician whose heartbeat helped shape the sound of the city.
