Biography

Oswald Ottendorfer arrived from Germany and transformed the New Yorker Staats-Zeitung into a cornerstone of immigrant civic life, using his press to inform, educate, and defend the working community.

His generous support for hospitals, schools, and cultural institutions gave lasting strength to New York’s diverse neighborhoods, and he is remembered with gratitude in Green-Wood Cemetery.
