Paul Hymans

1865–1941 (age 76)

Biography

Paul Hymans came of age in Belgium, studying law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and rising quickly as a voice for liberalism and the rule of law. As Foreign Minister and later as one of the early presidents of the League of Nations Assembly, he persistently advocated for peaceful resolution of disputes and the rights of smaller nations.

Even as Europe was torn by conflict, he remained committed to education and cooperation, leaving behind writings that encouraged dialogue across borders; his grave at Ixelles Cemetery reminds visitors of the statesman who sought to bind former adversaries together.
