Biography

Peter William Barlow, whose name is remembered for the eponymous formula for column strength, applied mathematical rigor to the engineering of tunnels, sewers, and bridges, most notably in his role advancing London's subterranean railways.

He advised on harbours and docks, mentored younger engineers, and championed careful surveying, leaving behind a body of practical writing that continued to guide safe construction after his death.
