Philip Hoffman Downes II

Biography

Philip Hoffman Downes II was born at the dawn of the twentieth century and grew up in the East Harrisburg area as the city expanded along the Susquehanna River. He spent his youth learning the value of hard work and civic responsibility, standing beside neighbors through the challenges of industrial life and the upheavals of the First World War.

He remained rooted in the community that raised him, lending support to local schools and organizations and taking satisfaction in the everyday rhythms of a city in transition. His family laid him to rest in East Harrisburg Cemetery, where they continue to honor a life of steadfast friendship and gentle leadership.
