Pleasance Smith

Biography

Pleasance Smith was a dedicated editor whose career spanned the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her work in editorial roles contributed to the literary and intellectual discourse of her era, demonstrating the significant contributions women made to publishing and letters during a period when such roles were predominantly male-dominated.

Smith's long life, extending from 1773 to 1877, allowed her to witness and participate in the transformation of British publishing and culture across more than a century. She was laid to rest at St. Margaret's Church in Lowestoft, where her legacy as an editor and woman of letters is remembered.
