Biography

Plenty Coups guided the Crow Nation through a time of enormous upheaval, using diplomacy and insight to keep his people together while negotiating with a rapidly expanding United States. A prophetic dream in childhood led him to seek cooperation with other tribes and settlers, and he became a celebrated leader who guarded traditions even as he adapted to change.

He championed education and civic engagement for Crow youth, later creating a park and mausoleum that continue to teach visitors about the strength and resilience of his people, and Plenty Coups State Park Cemetery holds his resting place.
