Biography
Powhatan Beaty displayed extraordinary valor as a sergeant in the United States Colored Troops, earning the Medal of Honor for rallying his men during the assault on Fort Gregg and carrying the colors when others fell.
After the Civil War he built bridges between communities as a minister and performer, championing education for African Americans, and he rests at Union Baptist Cemetery in remembrance of the courage and faith he exemplified.
