Born into the House of Savoy in 1873, Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, forged a life of daring service that spanned polar exploration, alpine mountaineering, and leadership within the Italian Navy.

His later expeditions carried him to East Africa, and he is commemorated near the Shebelle River, where his passion for discovery continues to inspire scholars of the region.
