Redcliffe Nathan Salaman (1874–1955) trained in natural science and medicine before turning his considerable talents to the study of plants, finding a lifelong calling in the botany of staple crops.
His book The History and Social Influence of the Potato remains a classic, combining plant pathology with social history, and his work helped protect potato harvests from blight while deepening appreciation for the crop’s cultural importance.
