Biography

Reginald Dyer rose through the ranks of the British Indian Army and spent much of his service in the Punjab and on the Northwest Frontier; in 1919 he ordered troops into the crowds gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, a decision that reverberated across the Empire and shaped debates about imperial governance.

He spent his final years in England and was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium in 1927, leaving a legacy that is still debated by historians of the Raj.
