Reinhard Bendix (1916–1991) brought European sociological traditions to American universities, crafting seminal studies on the formation of nation-states, authority and work.
He was a longtime presence in Alameda County, mentoring scholars on both sides of the Atlantic, editing journals, convening comparative seminars and insisting on scholarship that was rigorous yet humanistic.
