Richard Beale Davis

1907–1981 (age 74)

Scholar/Historian

Biography

Richard Beale Davis spent a lifetime unraveling the stories embedded in American and Southern literature, a pursuit that earned him a reputation as one of Virginia’s most thoughtful scholars. As a professor, he opened classrooms at the University of Virginia and beyond to voices from early America, guiding students to appreciate both regional particularities and universal human aspirations.

His careful editing, teaching, and public lectures brought forgotten writings back into circulation, and his colleagues recall a patient mentor who celebrated scholarship with humility. The intellectual rigor he modeled remains a foundation for those who study the South’s literary heritage, and he is laid to rest at Blandford Cemetery.
