Richard Dobson

1773–1847 (age 74)

Biography

Richard Dobson, born in 1773, devoted his career to the health of sailors as a naval surgeon, attending aboard ships when fever and battle took their toll and helping to bring calm to frightened crews. His careful records and calm hands were a comfort to men far from home.

He later shared his knowledge with others and continued to serve the Medway community, where his commitment is recalled at the Medway Heritage Centre in Chatham. His steady care lives on in the sailors he aided.
