Biography
Richard Garnett dedicated his life to the care of books and manuscripts, serving in a library whose collections formed a shared heritage of learning. He applied his linguistic gifts and calm authority to the preservation and cataloguing of rare works that scholars still consult today.
Colleagues admired his quiet intellect and steady guidance, which helped the institution meet the rising demands of nineteenth-century research; he now rests in Highgate Cemetery where his guardianship of knowledge is gratefully remembered.
