Richard Smith, born in 1735, was among the early civic-minded citizens of Natchez who helped lay the foundations of commerce, law, and hospitality on the Mississippi frontier.

He partnered with fellow residents to maintain order and support charitable causes as the city grew, a life of quiet leadership now commemorated at Natchez City Cemetery.
