Robert Brasillach
1909–1945 (age 36)
Biography
Robert Brasillach emerged as a gifted writer and critic in the interwar years, publishing novels, essays and poetry that reflected his passion for language and his sharp sense of literary debate. He studied at the Lycée Henri-IV before joining Parisian literary circles, where his work earned him a reputation as a fearless and sometimes controversial voice.
During the Occupation, Brasillach remained unrepentant in his commitment to the causes he espoused in the pages of Je suis partout, and that steadfastness led to his arrest and trial after Liberation. He was executed in 1945, yet his literary output and the debates surrounding his legacy continue to be studied by scholars interested in the moral complexities of the era.
