Photographer/Inventor
Biography
Robert Cornelius of Philadelphia became one of America’s earliest photographers, opening the nation’s first commercial photographic studio and producing what is widely recognized as one of the very first photographic self-portraits in 1839.
He later parlayed his technical skill into a thriving lighting business, remaining a trusted inventor and community member whose legacy rests beside many fellow innovators at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
