Biography

Robert Fechner transformed the Civilian Conservation Corps into a model of discipline, opportunity, and environmental stewardship during the Great Depression. As director he guided hundreds of thousands of young Americans into conservation work that left a lasting mark on public lands while instilling pride and a sense of purpose.

He believed in dignified labor and in the power of government partnership with citizens, a vision that carried into every initiative he led. His legacy lives on in the forests, parks, and trails whose care he helped institutionalize.
