Robert McFarlane was born in 1727 and died in 1800 at the advanced age of 73. He was a colonial resident who lived through the most transformative decades of British India, from the mid-eighteenth century through the turn of the nineteenth century.

McFarlane's long life spanned a remarkable period of historical change. His burial at South Park Street Cemetery reflects his family's long-standing presence and prominence in colonial Calcutta, making him a living link to the earliest generations of British settlement in India.
