Robert Rowand Anderson

1834–1921 (age 87)

Biography

Robert Rowand Anderson was among the most respected architects of his generation, shaping the face of nineteenth century Scotland through buildings such as the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the reinvigorated civic colleges in Edinburgh. He blended scholarly detail with a humane sense of scale, making each hall, chapel, and commission feel both dignified and welcoming.

His influence endured through pupils and the rows of restored cathedrals that now stand as testaments to his care for stone and spirit; when he died in 1921 the city of Edinburgh and the parish of Warriston claimed his memory with gratitude for the spaces in which they pray and gather.
