Robert Thompson Crawshay

1817–1879 (age 62)

Biography

Robert Thompson Crawshay, heir to the Cyfarthfa ironworks, nurtured the traditions of Welsh metallurgy at a time when wrought iron and coal once again reshaped the world. He guided the works with an exacting respect for craft, embracing new furnaces and a loyal corps of foremen who under his watch refined the quality of iron and the fortunes of the Merthyr workforce.

Deeply aware of the responsibility that came with such influence, he championed schools and chapels for his workers, and his final resting place beside the railings that guard his gravestone evokes the care he took for both stone and steel. The memorial that stands today offers a quiet reflection on a man of the industry, whose name is interwoven with the pillars of South Wales’s iron age.
