Samuel Augustus Ward devoted his life to church music, serving as organist and choirmaster in New Jersey congregations while helping to raise the standards of sacred song. He studied European traditions, mentored young musicians, and championed the use of congregational singing to deepen worship.

His enduring legacy rests on the melody "Materna", later paired with Katharine Lee Bates's poem to become "America the Beautiful"; it has provided a dignified, hopeful air for patriotic and memorial occasions ever since.
