Biography
Samuel B. Maxey earned recognition as a lawyer and officer from Texas before the Civil War, eventually serving as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. After the conflict he returned to legal practice and then, beginning in 1875, represented Texas in the United States Senate, where he worked on matters of finance, veterans' affairs, and the reconstruction of the Southern economy.
He spent his later years mentoring younger lawyers and remained a devoted advocate for the interests of Texas, keeping alive the memory of those who had given so much for their convictions.
