Biography

Samuel E. Lewis came of age in the years before the Civil War and lived through Reconstruction and the progressive stirrings of the late 19th century; he applied whatever talents he possessed to make his neighborhood kinder and more resilient. He was known locally for practical skill, a quiet wit, and a readiness to lend a hand to neighbors facing hardship.

His life was a testament to simple dedication and the belief that ordinary acts of kindness deserve remembrance, and he was laid to rest with honors at North Burial Ground.
