Minister/Educator

Biography

Samuel Eusebius McCorkle (1746–1811) was a Presbyterian minister and pioneering educator in North Carolina, founding academies that prepared young men for the ministry and the professions while championing the creation of a state university. A friend of other founding educators, he wrote textbooks, promoted classical learning, and labored to bring disciplined scholarship to the frontier.

He rests beside Thyatira Presbyterian Church, where his grave honors a pastor and teacher who believed that faith and education were twin pillars of a flourishing republic.
