Biography
Samuel G. Arnold studied law and emerged as a dedicated Rhode Island leader, serving as a U.S. Senator in the Civil War era and championing the Union cause with measured judgment. He also participated in state government and in efforts to steady the nation during a time of great division.
Beyond politics, he remained devoted to historical scholarship and civic improvement, and he was laid to rest at Swan Point Cemetery, where many of Rhode Island’s public servants find repose.
