Biography
Samuel Phillips, Jr., born in 1752, was a pastor and educator who graduated from Harvard and devoted his ministry to the town of Andover, Massachusetts, exhorting young minds and shaping the moral life of the congregation. He is best known for founding Phillips Academy, an institution born of his conviction that a public-spirited education would strengthen the republic.
Through preaching, teaching, and generous endowment, Phillips wove together faith and learning into a legacy honored at South Church in Andover long after his passing.
