Biography

Samuel Rhoads Franklin embarked on a naval career before the Civil War and served throughout the conflict in the Gulf and Atlantic blockading squadrons, rising to command squadrons that kept vital sea lanes open.

He continued to serve into the era of steam, taking senior posts that guided the Navy through modernization in the late 19th century, and was laid to rest among fellow sailors at Arlington National Cemetery.
