Samuel Sharpe

1801–1832 (age 31)

Biography

Samuel Sharpe combined the meticulous care of a banker with a scholar’s devotion to biblical studies, producing translations and commentaries that made the Scriptures more accessible to a wider public. His pioneering interest in Egyptology added fresh perspective to his theological reflections, and he freely shared his erudition with fellow believers in the name of Christian learning.

Despite personal trials, his work remained marked by earnestness and humility, and he now rests peacefully in Abney Park Cemetery, leaving a legacy of piety and learning.
